Burnout or a crossroads? How to tell which one you're in
Burnout is depletion. The wanting is still there and the energy is gone.
A crossroads is the other way around. The energy is there, and the wanting got silenced. Many of my clients arrive with plenty of energy and no idea what they want.
They usually spent fifteen or twenty years building something. A company, a brand, a corporate legacy. The money came. The accolades came. And then one morning, none of it meant what it used to.
From the outside it looks like they have everything. From the inside it feels like living someone else's life. They have dialed things back, or they are about to, and the question of what they actually want has no clear answer in front of it.
Here is a way to tell which one you are in. Picture a day with nothing on the calendar. If you can see the day and lack the strength to reach for it, that is depletion. If you have the strength and cannot see the day, you are at a crossroads.
The two call for very different work. Depletion asks for rest, and plenty of it. A crossroads asks for an honest set of questions. The first one is the one you have been dismissing for years: What do I actually want?
This is coaching, and it faces forward. If you are in acute crisis, that needs clinical support first, and I will say so plainly.
In The Return to Self, we work out which one you are in on our first call. Then we spend twelve weeks, one session a week, on the question underneath.
Which one sounds closer to your last six months?
